What's your opinion of the AFA? Because of their ultra conservative stance, the amount of which they protest, and the things they publicly condemn (or find objectionable), they tend to be very controversial. Some even peg them as being akin to a 'hate' group, because of their general stance on things related to homosexuality. What do you think?

If they are a hate group, so is every group on the left that advocates for what it believes in. IMO, the label "hate group" is just a bully tactic to belittle opposing viewpoints. The term seems to come with built-in excuses for double standards.

I don't have a problem with the AFA. There are plenty of liberals groups to counteract them. So I don't see the problem.

Every group somebody disagree's with (to a larger degree) is always a hate group. FORGIVENESS MAN I think it's funny.

Any group of people whose purpose is to outright deny or hamper the rights of other people are a hate group. Of course there is the irony of having a high ranking member of that group being one of those very people him (or her) self.

And of course if you disagree with a group's cause, you always see it as hampering the rights of other people, regardless of whether or not it is. People love their excuses. As I said, it's funny to see.

Quote :
From Sarah Posner of Religious Dispatches comes accusations of former employees who attests to the not-so Christian attitude of the so-called pro-family group and a lot of it has to do with the controversial Bryan Fischer:

Fischer, who hosts a daily radio show on AFA’s radio network of 180 stations, has, among other things, claimed that inbreeding causes Muslims to be stupid and violent; called for the deportation of Muslims and for banning them from military service

http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasy/2010/10/12/former-employees-bash-american-family-association-for-racism-employee-abuse/

Quote :
Today the American Family Association sent out an email asking for people's opinion in the Republican campaign for 2012. Typical of the antigay AFA, commenter Angela Harper, noted these racist views on the American Family Association website. The AFA webpage http://www.afa.net/poll/ was asking for members to vote and solicited comments from members regarding their choices for President.

Angela writes,
Quote :
"...And I don't mean to play the race card, but as an African-American, he would stand a better chance of getting the "black" vote. As things stand, most African-Americans are going to vote for Obama for the same reason they did in the last election....because they see him as a "brotha" and as a chance to continue receiving welfare..."

http://www.changingtheplanet.com/2011/05/american-family-association-shows.html

That pretty much says it all, I'd say.

Chris, as a fellow Waldenbooks alum, I think we can be proud of this:

Quote :
In 1989 the AFA boycotted WaldenBooks in an attempt to persuade the company to stop selling Playboy and Penthouse magazines. As a result, WaldenBooks launched an advertisement campaign against censorship, asserting First Amendment rights. WaldenBooks, American Booksellers Association, the Council for Periodical Distributors Association, the International Periodical Distributors Association, and Duval Bibb Services launched a lawsuit against the AFA in October 1989, under the Federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) and the Florida State RICO Acts, which protect an organization's right to conduct business without harassment or threats.[27] The case was later settled by the parties without a court ruling.

True but I think it was a civil case. Although there still may have been a lot of yelling.

Replace the word "Family" with Fascist, and you will have something much closer to the truth.
