Thanks for being interested everybody. 
The back of my gums were very red and swollen; the tooth was a little loos, but didn't need to be pulled. The dentist gave me a shot of Novocaine to temporarily dull the pain, and prescribed an oral medication. There's still some soreness, but it's feeling better.
Headaches, toothaches; I'm afraid to think about what could be behind door number three.

Did he say what was causing the swollen and red gums? I hope that what he did for you works and you are pain free.

I'm glad you're feeling better Chris. Sorry, but I can't recall what you said you did to it. It's a total loss? It can't be fixed but the dentist is leaving it in your mouth?

It all began when I stupidly tried to bite into a frozen cookie (which was like metal) last week. It didn't agree with one of my back teeth. I so blatantly bit into it that it caused the tooth to become slightly lose; that's where the redness and gum swelling came from.
