Do you think they're worth while so people can see a lion up close or are too many like prisons?

    Zoos Empty Re: Zoos

Post by Shale Sun Jul 03, 2011 7:46 pm

Zoos are not like they were in the 19th century with animals kept in cages. For all of my life they have gone toward natural habitat and Zoos are now on missions to preserve our natural fauna, as they continue being endngered in the wild.

My family has always enjoyed the St. Louis Zoo and I am a supporting member for years. It is still free to the public, just as it was in my childhood - something I think is very important and why I support it tho I rarely get to visit.

I am so/so on zoos. If they are set up well, they bother me much less. On Washington Island last year, we went to an ostrich farm/petting zoo. We left that dump feeling so sad because it was not well maintained and it was so sad for the dirty, sad animals. For example, they had one bear, in a small area, and I am no animal expert, but I know that was a terrible life for that bear.

I acknowlede what Sale said about the more modern zoos that try to replicate the natural habitat but there are still too many animals shut up in cages. I can't set foot in a pet store.

It really does depend on the set-up. I visited a place called "The Living Zoo" in Palm Springs and it was really good. Zoos like that I support.

I'm cool with zoos. However, certain animals shouldn't be kept in confinement.

Honestly, I haven't been to a zoo since I was about eight years old. I do see the prison correlation. However, I do think that under the right schemes, and providing a larger space, a zoo doesn't necessarily have to be uncomfortable for the animals -- and probably can be the closest thing attempt to 'domesticate' the creatures that are wild.

TSJ I went to the living Desert in Palm Springs a few years ago. It was summer and it was so hot and the animals looked like they were literally dying. I remember I could not stay to see all of it but I saw most of it before the heat got to me and my friends. I am quite sure they take steps there to cool them down but I didn't see it.
