Text books are a total scam. A 600 pg book at Borders might run $30-40, but a text book at runs $80.

Re: Are college books a ripoff?
I think the whole idea of college is a ripoff, thousands of people are going to stay over $40,000 in student loan debts until they die, because even though they've got the oh so great degrees, they still can't get any work that makes enough money to pay back what it cost in the first place.

Re: Are college books a ripoff?
I know mine would cost about $300 back in the day. I can imagine what it would cost now.

I always tried to get the "International Version" of any major book. They're paperbacks with no color, but the content was generally the same and I normally saved hundreds that way.

************ YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are a TOTAL ripoff. Luckily, there are sometimes ways to save a bit. (ie Amazon sometimes has the books for a fraction of the price that the store does.)

Re: Are college books a ripoff?
I think the worst part is that they upgrade to new editions, with very little changing. That seems like just a way to hurt the resale of books, which obviously behooves publishers.
I think professors really need to be responsible when putting out the reading list.
