If you're gay/bisexual–(or gay-friendly)–could you be friends with someone who opposed same sex marriage?

If one of your friends said to you that they believed that marriage was the union of men with women, exclusively (and that they do no support marriage rights for same sex couples), would that put a hindrance on the relationship?

It would be a definite hindrance for me. I would have a problem being friends & certainly not good friends with someone who wants to deny basic human rights to people. The best I could offer to them would be civility, but not any kind of real friendship.

While I am not gay/bi, I can be and am friends with people who are of different religious, ideological, and political beliefs from me. (And that is essentially all that this question asks) This includes people who support stuff I feel violates basic human rights. (Therefore, I feel it comparable enough.) I'm tolerant enough to look past superficial stuff like that.

It would not put a hindrance on my friendship everyone is entitled to their own opinions and beliefs as long as they keep it to themselves and don't constantly throw it in my face. They also will not be invited to the wedding Smile

I could be friends with such a person, or even someone who thought homosexuality was immoral, as long as they are not on a constant soapbox about it and touting their opinions when around me.

Yes. I'd be lying if I said I didn't know quite a few people who opposed it. We would just disagree. So long as they aren't trying to change my opinion, or being especially aggravating with their P.O.V., then whatever. Let's talk about something else.

Just to clarify. In view of another topic regarding the No H8 campaign, no. I couldn't be friends with someone who went beyond just having a personal belief about marriage being a hetero institution to someone who was active in trying to deny it to others. I can make the distinction.

It depends. Mostly on how "vocal" they are with me concerning this issue. I can be friends with people who have differences of opinion. But if they are constantly ramming their opinion down my throat, knowing that I disagree with it, then I cannot. I actually have one or two friends (and family) who is anti-gay marriage. We get along because that is a subject we don't discuss with each other. We can agree to disagree. But if they were overbearing about it and constantly spewing their beliefs, then I would discontinue the relationship.

Fortunately, most of my friends are liberals from places like New York and San Francisco, and they couldn't care less about "the gay agenda". People that grow up exposed to many different cultures and lifestyles are typically much more tolorant of different people and embrace them as "people". Most of my friends would be against discrimination and champion equal rights for everyone. I try to stay away from "the south" and "the midwest" as much as possible so I rarely run into the types you are talking about unless it's in the military.

Unless your friend is a voting member of congress, their objection to it means what exactly? They can "disagree" all they want, it won't stop the train of progress.

one of my friends told me that gay marriage would destroy traditional marriage. I said, "When are you getting divorced from your wife of 30years?" He was confused. I reminded him that gay marriage is legal in some places and asked how it was going to affect him and his wife. He couldnt answer.

If someone opposes gay marriage, they shouldnt marry a gay person!

Sounds like my son's ex-girlfriend's mother who recently wrote online that gay marriage would end humanity. It's the easiest thing in the world to understand but they don't.
