Has anyone here taken someone under their wing? A child (Big Brothers/Big Sisters), a younger family member, or neighborhood kid? What about in business? Have you guided any wet behind the ears co-workers at your place of employment?

How was the mentoring experience for you and would you do it again?

A little bit on a couple of occassions. I have no problem helping someone if they need/ask for it.

I took care of my sisters kids several years ago, when my sister wasn't around for a good amount of time. I cooked, bathed, got them dressed, dropped/picked them up for school, helped them with homework, etc.. My mother helped with this too, but I really did majority of it.

Is this what you mean, Nhaiyel?

At the time it was hard, all of sudden having 2 kids to take care of, but it brought me and my niece and nephew closer, they are also my babies now too.

I wouldn't mind doing it again, I don't mind helping family out, just hope it would be under much different circumstances.

For about a year, I was a Big Sister. My little sis moved to Texas, so then that ended, and I didn't want to get another.

I have trained people at work, and usually after that happens I become their 'go-to' person when something isn't right with them.

I've trained many people on the work front over the years--it's an expected thing in the lab field, because each year, we take on students doing their clinical rotation from the few lab programs left in my area.

I'm also the person that everyone goes to for answers and supervisory guidance, even though I've never officially held the title of "Supervisor". I've acted in place of an absentee one, many times, and I've realized that you don't necessarily have to have the title to be a leader--if fellow employees want you to guide and be in charge of them, they'll hold you in that esteem regardless of any title or lack of, after your name.

That's how it it with me--most people where I work consider me to be their boss, feel comfortable having me be in charge, and look to me for guidance.

This is about the only 'mentoring' I've ever done.

Not really - not consciously, anyway. Smile
