- California governor signs bill requiring schools to teach gay history
By the CNN Wire Staff July 15, 2011 1:26 a.m. EDT
"History should be honest," Democratic California Gov. Jerry Brown said about the gay history legislation.
Los Angeles (CNN) -- Democratic California Gov. Jerry Brown said Thursday he had signed a bill that will require public schools in the state to teach students about the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.
The bill, believed to be the first of its kind in the nation, will also require teachers to provide instruction on the role of people with disabilities.
"History should be honest," Brown said in a statement.
"This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books. It represents an important step forward for our state, and I thank Senator Leno for his hard work on this historic legislation."
The governor was referring to the bill's author, Sen. Mark Leno, a San Francisco Democrat.
California law already requires state schools to teach about the contributions of Native Americans, African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, and Asian-Americans, among other groups.
"Today we are making history in California by ensuring that our textbooks and instructional materials no longer exclude the contributions of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Americans," Sen. Leno said in a statement.
Separately, he said the bill is thought to be the first of its kind in the nation. It will take effect in January, however, state textbooks are not likely to be updated until 2015, he said.
Leno's office cited research that shows students who learn about LGBT people are more likely to report their schools are inclusive and fair.
The bill, which passed the state legislature this month and the senate in April, according to the senator's office, is not without controversy.
It has drawn criticism from some religious and conservative groups, like the Traditional Values Coalition, a lobby organization that says it speaks on behalf of more than 43,000 churches.
"It is an outrage that Governor Jerry Brown has opened the classroom door for homosexual activists to indoctrinate the minds of California's youth, since no factual materials would be allowed to be presented," Rev. Louis Sheldon, chairman and founder of the Traditional Values Coalition, said in a statement.
"If parents don't already have their children out of public schools, this should cause them to remove them," he said. Source: http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/07/14/california.lgbt.education/

| Gay History? Yeah, let's separate the culture even more and cause even more division. Stupid ideas like this always do backfire. But I agree, this'll be a good motivator to abandon the public school system. They can't even properly teach American History, or basic reading and writing skills all that well in public schools these days. Now we're going to mandate that they teach more? Pulease.
Any time the government tries to mandate ANYTHING in regards to education, it almost always ends badly. It'll just make the school system even more of a joke and make alternatives all the more appealing. Like always, self-defeating policies in the end.

| I can just imagine the outcry against it, but I can't see what it will hurt to acknowledge the contributions that helped move society forward by people who just happened to be gay. It isn't as though kids are going to be taught about gay sex. | |

| I don't really understand. It sounds to me like they are saying, "see even gay people did some important stuff." Maybe I am not fully understanding. Prudent topics relating to the gay culture should certainly be in history books, but I am not really sure about singling them out in another manner. | |

| I think one thing is that people downplay accomplishments in the gay movement. And a lot of people don't even know what they are.
Hence the need for historical accuracy and the spreading of knowledge.

Hence the need for historical accuracy and the spreading of knowledge. i totally agree. History in textbooks is so slanted as it is. I had no idea of how seperated the gay movement was in the beginning, men excluding women, races excluding eachother. There was one Salsa Sisters group that were black and latin lesbians who were refrained from joining the men's or white women's groups. However there is a way to over teach also. For a few years the ONLY history i was taught in school was native american and black history. Overkill is not good either. I think it is important that this stuff be taught in high school. Younger kids wouldnt understand. Perhaps it would help teenagers who are struggling with their sexuality to not feel so abnormal.

Problem is that the idea that this isn't done already is pure hogwash. Clearly, that's not the goal of such legislation.

| I don't have a problem acknowledging that a historical person was gay or lesbian. I don't know that a law is needed. If they just taught history, many would be acknowledged: - Quote :

| They left off shakespeare!
I never heard James I or marie antoinette... i read a lot of history. James I was a very devout catholic who translated the bible from greek/hebrew into english, hence the King James Bible. Not to say that it is impossible to be catholic and homosexual at the same time-- just interesting and surprising.

Regardless, gays and lesbians are well represented throughout history.

| As Ny said, it is impossible to know if people were actually gay or whether their was just speculation. Some people still believe the jokes about Catherine the Great having sex with a horse, but really how likely is that? During times when people couldnt discuss the topic, it is impossible to have proof.
honestly, I dont believe that someone's sexuality should matter when discussing contributions. i do think that what the group as a whole has gone through leads to tolerance and acceptance. If people do not object to the women's lib movement, and civil rights movements being taught, then why be opposed to the history of the gay rights movement being taught?

| Yeah, it's not really about people... it's about events and an account of social progression.
Shakespeare was a flaming queen, but he did nothing for the gay collective. He was simply a writer.

| Not impressed. I don't think it's a bad idea but California has a LOT of issues that Brown should be far more worried about first! I was in California when he was governor before and I thought he was a moron then. | |
