I have been an iconoclast most of my life and have dispensed with most traditions of my culture.
I still wear cutoff shorts, which I noticed are seldom seen any more. Maybe that is a tradition of my youth. Or, it could just be that it is most comfortable to wear.

About certain things, yes, which have more to do with holidays and events than anything else. Husband always takes his birthday off for himself, no exceptions. I always have 4-day weekends for the New Year, no exceptions yet.
It's become somewhat traditional for our Thanksgiving dinners to include people who normally won't have one ~ the elder neighbor, a nephew, and brother-in-law. Husband almost cancelled it for this year but I don't think he will.
The 4th of July is always spent at the local 4-to-5 day blues festival, and family knows not to intefere with those plans.

Your post reminds me of one of my favorite things from my days living with my parents. Most Thanksgivings and sometimes Christmas, included some bachelor who had no family near to celebrate with. It was always so cool because the guys would be compelled to tell stories and I always enjoyed it.
