Wine at communion Empty Wine at communion

Post by Supernova Mon Feb 20, 2012 3:25 am

I had a thought this morning...where do you suppose churches get their wine from for communion?

During Whitney Houston's funeral, Kevin Costner got up to speak and said he was raised in a Baptist church like she was and as a kid he loved those little glasses of grape juice ( laughing ), and I take that as meaning the wine they serve there must be pretty good. Because no kid is going to like sour grape juice.

And I remember there was an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street when several people died after drinking poisoned wine and so EVERY place was shut down that served it and then they found out it was coming from the church. But you know, the idea of a clergyman paying a trip to the liquor store kind of seems like a conflict of interest, in appearance anyway...anybody know?

Yes, plain old Welch's with broken up crackers for the 'Last Supper' in the St. Louis Park (inner city) Baptist church when I was a kid.

Which was stupid, as Jesus drank real wine at the last supper. Without refrigeration regular grape juice has a life span of less than 3 days - wine is one of those natural drinks that was probably enjoyed in pre-history.

Also, there is no prob with Catholics drinking alcohol, that is purely a protestant construct. I have seen priests in taverns drinking beer.

    The store I imagine!

But just as a matter of fact, the Baptist church generally practices communion with non-alcoholic, regular grape juice which "simulates" the wine used at communion. Baptists are apparently rather superstitious about drinking in church, and since the whole gesture of communion is symbolic anyway they don't see the need to use real while. And although using grape juice seems like it kind of defeats the purpose of mimicing Christ's actual last supper instructions and comes off as rather silly to me, it is in no way any sillier than when Catholics do communion using real actual alcoholic wine, but believe that it is transubstantiated for the ACTUAL blood of Christ (which is equally ridiculous).

Wikipedia's got an article that might explain it. IDK about exactly where they get it. I'm sure they got places. Razz

I wonder if whoever manufactures the "blood of Christ" would be willing to ship to a residential address. It was the only thing I liked about church.

The only time there was real wine at any church I ever went to was an Anglican church. I made sure I never partook of communion there again!

Throughout the world there are some wineries that exist either solely for the production of sacramental wines, or with sacramental wines as an auxiliary business. The same is true of wine used by other religions, e.g., kosher wine. These wineries are small and often run by religious brothers, priests or dedicated laity.

Has a lot to do with additives and preservatives.
