My Ride To Work This Morning

I may have posted pix before of cars stuck on the sidewalk of the 79th Street Bridge after sliding into the concrete rail. In my 12 years of making this daily trip I know it is a common occurrence in the rain for cars to slide into that side of the bridge, once taking out the concrete completely and almost going into Biscayne Bay. One time I came across such a car stuck on the sidewalk, maybe within 5 or 10 minutes of it happening and it gave me pause to think, what if I had been biking across that spot at the exact moment.

Well, today was the closest so far - 5 seconds between my passing and the truck slamming into the wall. I was pedaling up the bridge and heard this loud noise behind me, at first wondering if it was lightning (but no flash). I turned around and saw it - right where I had just passed. Great opportunity to see why this common accident happens - seems he wasn't speeding, the street is just that slick on the downgrade after leaving the metal drawbridge.

"If you don't like my driving - Get off the sidewalk"

That thought would have occured to me a lot sooner than that! If this is as common as you say, the city has never even tried to fix the problem? I guess they need to wait until someone dies. Maybe not even then. Stay safe.

Here are a few pix I collected over the years. I didn’t have a camera in my bag before 2004 so there are more accidents that I did not get a pic of. These are from the same area of the same bridge.

This is when someone nearly got thru the concrete and would have gone into the bay. Had to hit that hard.

Oh, and it is not just that bridge that makes me realize how vulnerable we are on the sidewalks here.

On July 4, 2004, I biked past this little bridge and the fence was intact. Hours later when I returned this is what I saw. The fence is a false security to the ppl on the sidewalk.

Then there are things that defy description. All I can think of is we have our own unique way of

Have you ever sent those pics to a newspaper?

I may. I have been thinking of writing something about this adventure in living amongst the cars for years and my collection of pix has grown.

This really close one today may give me a good opening for that piece. IDK what can be done about the bridge. I think they should make a more prominent sign about slippery wet pavement. The crashes are all on the downgrade side in wet weather. I wish I had gotten a pic when they took out that barrier arm for the drawbridge.

Could be something to do tomorrow while stuck in my apartment.

That little episode yesterday on the 79th Street Bridge in Miami, made me finish an essay I had been meaning to get to for years. (Helps that I was stuck inside today with tropical storm weather outside) I also ran it by a couple of local weeklies to see if they'd be interested.

Here is the essay, with pix of Unsafe Streets & Sidewalks in Miami:
