Very good songs Tony; I especially liked the first one with Peter Cetera (who I admit I'm a fan of.) Has that relaxed, easy listening early/mid 80s sound that I'm a sucker for.

I think it may have been a fairly big hit back in the 80's for them both and its a great song!

The 'ABBA' Discussion Thread Empty Frida from Abba singing jazz and opera

Post by Chris Tue Apr 19, 2011 11:02 am

For most people Agnetha Fältskog (the blond soprano) was considered the most prominent singer of ABBA. However the alto of ABBA, Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad, could hold her own. She was/is a very versatile singer. In fact before ABBA Frida was a jazz singer in Sweden.

Here's a clip of Frida from 1967 before ABBA singing a smooth jazz song in Swedish which includes some scat singing segments. The song begins at 1.50 after an interview.

Frida was challenged to try singing opera during a televised jam session with ABBA, Andy Gibb and Olivia Newton-John. Although she hesitated and although she more or less was joking there's no doubt she had potential. Here's the outcome

Here's Frida singing Dancing Queen acapella with "The Real Group".

Here's Frida doing a little yodeling

Frida could have been an opera singer had she pursued it. I am quite sure it is not easy but with her voice she could have done it. Both her and Agnetha were on totally different paths before they met up and teamed up with Benny and Bjorn and became ABBA. Their voices blended together created a very unique, beautiful and powerful sound that the European world became in awe of. They did o.k. here in the states but their popularity remained in Europe. I wish I could have seen them in concert that would have been an amazing show. I have always been partial to Agnetha, and have enjoyed her success as a solo artist. Frida did not produce as much english music as Agnetha did but her two albums that were released in the 80's, "Something's going on" and "Shine" were wonderful. Somethings going on was a very big album for Frida here in the states unfortunately Shine didn't fare so well with only the title song being released as a 12 inch remix which was quite good.

Interesting. I don't remember ever hearing the original, so I got to hear their rendition without bias ears.
