    The
    controversial British import series “Skins” made its debut on the cable
    network last Monday, causing uproar for its frank depiction of teenage
    sex and drug use. But unlike MTV’s envelope-pushing shows of the past,
    “Skins” features underage actors engaged in sexual situations. The
    youngest star of the show is 15.

    “Skins” is rated TV-MA. According to tvguidelines.org, a TV-MA rating
    signifies that the program “is specifically designed to be viewed by
    adults and therefore may be unsuitable for children under 17.”

    It looks like another show that is acceptable by European standards that must be censored to be shown in the so-called "Land of the Free." Movies have had to do this for years, like Eyes Wide Shut. The problem goes back a couple hundred years when England and then the Netherlands ran those fucked up religious fanatic Puritans out. Guess where they went?

    The critics are a bit overzealous by wanting to condemn the show on the self-censored scenes that were not aired here. They no doubt are aghast that we don't limit ourselves to Ozzie & Harriet type shows where married couples sleep in separate beds and don't say naughty words like "virgin" or "pregnant."

    The MTV execs should have seen this coming tho. You can have a 13-year-old depicted butchering the bad guys in bloody scenes in Kick-Ass and saying lines like "just fucking with you Big Daddy" in a movie that she can't legally go watch, but no sex depiction for a 15-year-old who may actually be having sex for real in England - just like the kids here sneaking around.

    So, they should have re-made the series to American standards, using 18-year-old actors who look 15.

    I'm pretty against all of this stuff personally but I do think the child pornography talk is a little bit over the top. One year later and it would just be regular pornography? Come on, this is about child porn. The show is probably immoral crap but this fuss is a but hard to take seriously.

    I read this the other day, but I'd have to see the show before I could really comment on it. I will say that if there wasn't any nudity, then I dismiss the accusation of child porn.

    I haven't seen this show on MTV, because I don't watch MTV, but the controversy surrounding this reminds me of those CK ads that ran on MTV back in the 90s that used a bunch of shirtless teenage boys and clad teenage girls being asked questions of a pseudo suggestive nature by the photographer. They said it was had child porn undertones, but I thought people were reading too much into it.

    So has anyone watched this show? I think I saw that it was slated to air last night, but I didn't bother to make a note to watch it, as I'm beyond MTV teen drama; but the next time it airs (if it does) then I may force myself to try and watch, just to see if it's worth the controversy. I heard Doritos recently pulled out of sponsoring the show.

    I haven't seen the show either so I have no opinion on the scenes with under 18 actors. But I have to say that MTV should have found 18+ actors for all the roles. How hard would that have been? It is in better taste, and if the scenes are risque, they still would have gotten press from that. Using underage actors is probably taking it too far.

    I watched it, but it didn't seem that bad to me. I wouldn't want my kids watching it...But for people 18+...meh.

    I tried to watch it to see what the fuss was about, and couldn't get through the episode. It was boring to me.

    Just a bunch of exaggerated hype. I have seen episodes of Married With Children where a young Bud Bundy basically acted the same way, even if it was done from a comedic/satirical angle.
