    Henry Miller Empty Henry Miller

Post by MandyPerfumeGirl Thu May 12, 2011 12:20 pm

    Hi all,

I've tried reading "The Tropic of Cancer" and "The Tropic of Capricorn", but I couldn't finish them! Henry had this habit of making sentences so extremely long that I'd forget what he was talking about in the first place. Plus, each of these books had seemingly no plot (from what I have actually read.)

At the same time, despite all this, he was a very talented writer. Some of what he says makes a person think. He was probably one of the most blunt authors. I love his unapologetic selfishness and honesty. In one of the books (can't remember which one), he had sex in his home with his secretary while his wife was having an abortion. It's sick, but there is something interesting about this type of perversion.

So, as you can tell, I feel two different ways for his writing, both the pros and cons.

Has anyone here read some of his stuff? Opinions?

I know of him but I've never read any of his work.

Nope. But I read the stories from Anais Nin (Henry Miller's lover). For a female writer...she's quite...interesting.

Never read him and I don't think they have him at the library here because I think I would've found those by now if they did.

I agree, she definitely has some interesting stories. It's a shame that one can't find too many of her books in bookstores. I usually buy her stuff online and have it shipped to the house.

I don't think they have him here in our libraries either, his work is pretty explicit and sexually direct, but it is artistic and it seems taboo even in this day and age!
