Privately, that way if I said no there would be as minimum embarrassment as possible.

I would prefer in private. I've always felt men who propose in public are adding extra pressure for the woman to say "yes", so she doesn't embarass him if she should say "no". So yeah, I would prefer private - it's a private moment, no use shoving it in people's faces.

No proposal in my case. My wife and I were living together for 3 years and decided to get married.

If 2 people are been together for a long enough time and if they talked about marriage, then I don't think a man proposing in private or public is less or more pressure. He should already have a gist of what her answer is gonna be.
