1996 was a very bad year--we were in and out of hospitals constantly, for treatments and checkups on my daughter who wasn't even a year old yet. She was born with a retinoblastoma (eye cancer) in her left eye, that has since left her blind on that side. Bad, bad, bad year. .. .

I was 20, had started school that past Spring semester, was in a relationship that needed to be over, but was dragging on because we were both to afraid to call it over. Life was good enough at that time, but not amazing.

Done with my junior year of high school. A good friend of mine was a year ahead of me in school, so I went to her graduation. We spent the summer together, geeked about my impending senior year and how she'd be starting college.

About to turn 13,living in NYC, about to start working for my dad and earning my own money, my cousin was visiting me from SC for the summer and we had a blast. 1996 was a damn good year.

I had just graduated high school, was hanging out with a bunch of goth poseurs. Both my mom and dad were in the throes of alcohol addiction so in the meantime I had to play stand in parent to my younger brother and sister.
