If you could go back in time to any period in history in any country/place, where would you go and why?

I always wanted to go to France during Louis XIV... the splendor and riches of that time (of the aristocracy atleast) seems so intriguing. The palace of versailles and the gardens along with the pampering of the rich.. would love to see all that.

Nothing as fancy as that, I'd want to go back to when Hollywood first started out and movies were first becoming a big thing, and I could mingle with the greats: Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Fatty Arbuckle, Charlie Chaplin, Mabel Normand, Mary Pickford, Lon Chaney, Lois Weber, Clara Bow, all those types.

The 70's....when Bob Marley was alive so I can see him perform. Any time before that isn't interesting enough for me to visit. Black people didn't have it good until recently.

Definitely the seventies. It was a long time ago, but not *that* long ago; so I would like to contrast the difference between it and today as far as the area I'm living in (and the people I know who were around at the time.)

England in the 18th or 19th century. Go to some of the balls that the aristocrats held at their estates, hang out with members of the Ton, go to a gentlemen's club and gamble with the rich, visit a bawdy house and just get a taste of life in a time long gone.

Well I'm black, so with that in mind I wouldn't go back to any point in time before the 1970's. We didn't exactly have it that great before then! I might go back to 1985 (my youth) just for nostalgic purposes. But other than that, I have no interest in experiencing "the past".

There are many periods I'd like to visit, but I think I'd select America 1920's first. The decade of silent films into "talkies", the art deco and Egyptian revival art and fashions, clothes, and the prosperousness before the Great Depression hit. And to witness how the "flapper revolution" shook things up (much like rock 'n' roll did in the 50's).

After that I would pick New Orleans in the early-to-mid 1800's.

Upon reading Buster Keaton's autobiography, My Wonderful World of Slapstick, I definitely would want to go back to 1919 Hollywood when all the fun was just starting. By his own testimony, the times and people were never so fun or carefree since the roaring 20s out there.

Good choice, especially for a young person. (re-evaluate your concepts of monogamy/cheating because a lot of young ppl then did not subscribe to those concepts)

As for me, late 19th Century London - If I had enuf money to live a gentleman's life and really check out Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Oscar Wilde and a few others. Whenever watching movies of the period (like Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes) I feel like I was there.

In fact, I do touch typing, which has a thing called 'finger memory' where your hands work independently of your brain. In my line of work I write behaviour a lot and have to go back and take out the 'u' which my fingers put in on their own. I think I am a reincarnated typist of the era.

There are historical events I'd like to witness but there aren't really any historical periods I would want to visit for more than a day that didn't have indoor plumbing, toilet paper and anesthesia.

Well, 19th Century London may not have had indoor plumbing but they did have News of the World.

I still don't want to have to dodge the emptying of chamber pots.
