Not just protective, but overprotective, to the point of strictness. If you have children, are you (or were you) generally strict with them? If you don't have children, can you imagine yourself being a strict parent?

People's definition of what defines "overprotective" is likely to vary too much to really give a definitive answer.

No you can really stifle a kid by being overprotective. Usually it isn't even about being protective but controlling.

Depends on what you mean by overprotective. But I will say that restriction only leads to rebellion, so it should be used sparingly.

I think it's better for parents to be a little overprotective; kids are aware of the boundaries and the limits, but yes it will lead to rebellion but any kid who does have to follow any kind of rules is going to rebel eventually. Rules exist and are enforced for a variety of reasons but usually it's done with good reason: safety, responsibility, etc.

I know I'm going to be a little more strict with my kids then my parents were with me. I won't be overbearing, but I won't be as lenient either. I can't let my kids grow up a product of this generation.

No. I think strictness sometimes has the opposite effect and causes kids to do things their parents object to. . . I dont think I'd be too strict or too lenient. I would try to be "fair".

I never really rebelled. lol
I guess if you don't have rules, you won't have rebellion, technically. You'll still have the same chaos going on but I guess somehow don't care about chaos as long as we're condoning it. lol
Sometimes being just a little overprotective is for the kid's own good. Being a parent is not just being the one who pays the kid's bills until he/she moves out. While overprotectiveness, like anything, can be carried to excess, I have a feeling a lot of the aversion to being overprotective is either an excuse to give the kid what he wants or to pressure you into conforming to a societal norm.

Re: Should parents be overprotective?
Well, I'll tell ya, I grew up with overly-strict parents, and my mother was very possessive and paranoid. That was NOT good, and it affected my relationship with my mother.
But I overcompensated with my own daughter and was too lenient most of the time, which wasn't good, either, and I regret that immensely.

Yes! What is overprotective for one, is not for another. I define myself as basically overprotective, but my son, at age 12, has proven to be a good kid so far, so I give him more freedom than other parents might. But, then there are other parents with sassy kids who give their kids the same freedoms. So, really, there isn't a good answer!
A friend of mine, with a daughter the same age as my son, was totally in shock when he saw my son at a certain park one afternoon. He felt like that park was too far for my son to bike to. But, his daughter still cries when being told "no" for ice cream or trips to McDonalds. My son has NEVER been a kid that cries over "no". So, a lot of it boils down to how mature the kid is too, on how protective we have to be.

Re: Should parents be overprotective?
I really think that it depends on the personality of the child. If the child is mature enough to do what is expected, then the purse straps can be loosened from time to time. If the child will deviate from order if not kept on top of, then strictness is more necessary. Personally, I think EVERY parent of a child between the ages of 18 months and 4 years old should practice a stricter parenting method. Then maybe when they're a little older, they'll make wiser decisions that won't warrant it.
