Were your parents overprotective?

When I say "overprotective", I don't necessarily mean STRICT just for the sake of being STRICT or on a power trip, but overprotective because they feared outside influences over you.

My mom was a little bit. My dad, not so much.

Outside influences? I don't know that I'd say overprotective about most things in general, yes, they were, and where they were when I was a kid, my brother still is now.

Not really, no. My parents were pragmatic enough to know what was worth turning the degrees up a bit on, and what wasn't, and they usually gave me the benefit of the doubt. If they didn't like certain things or people around me, they'd say so, but they didn't distrust everyone and everything. In general, my folks were rational and what you could call "fair."

Not really. They trusted us to be responsible and my brother and I were both pretty level-headed kids, so I guess they didn`t see a reason to be oveprotective.

Very. And I became a prime example of what happens when parents are overprotective, or too strict. I was naive as hell; but despite how 'hesitant' I was to do things that were bad, it didn't take much coaxing. Their honor student wound up a dad at eighteen.

I thought my parents were very strict, but I'm glad to report such was not the case with me.

My dad was strict with some things, but he was pretty clueless on a lot of stuff, so I never felt like there was anything I couldn't get over on him.

My parents were very strict with us, we had to be in at a certain time, we had to tell them where we were and they sent us all to Catholic School! As I got older the restrictions were cut down.

I had boundaries but a lot of freedom too. I made my share of mistakes but there was no property damage (much) or trips to the ER. I know exactly what you mean though Chris. We gave our daughter boundaries but room to breath. A couple of her friend's parents on the other hand were very strict. Their kids rebelled with unfortunate consequences.

I was the only child, so yep....but being the only child also let me get away a lot, so it balanced out.

No, my Mom wasn't overly strict. She knew how to set down the rules and draw the line, but she wasn't overly strict or overprotective. She gave me room enough to breathe.

Not really. I'm the oldest and when you're the oldest, parents usually focus on the younger one's more for overprotectedness. Plus my mom remarried when I was a preteen and had kids with her 2nd hubby so her attention was easily swayed away from me when it came to that.

for real? not wit my ma.. my oldest sister had it the worst!!! by time i became a teen (im third oldest) she was ALOT more lenient. By time my lil brother came up (he 7 yrs younger than i am) she was just like ppssshh.

Yeah but I'm the oldest of 5. Maybe if there were only 2 or 3 of us my mom would have focused more on me but there were always little one's around climbing the walls that needed immediate attention so as long as I told my mom where I was gonna be and when I was coming home, there usually wasnt a problem.
