- Florida Prosecutors Bill $140G for Casey Anthony Case
Published July 29, 2011 | NewsCore
July 17: Casey Anthony, center, walks to a SUV with her lawyer Jose Baez after her release from the Orange County Jail in Orlando, Fla.
Orlando – The Florida State Attorney's Office wants Casey Anthony to cover the costs -- more than $140,000 -- incurred in relation to her prosecution, according to documents revealed Thursday.
Anthony was found not guilty earlier this month of murdering her two-year-old daughter Caylee in a high-profile trial that gripped the nation. Since her release from Orange County Jail in Orlando, Fla., on July 17, after spending nearly three years behind bars, her whereabouts have been unknown.
Anthony was convicted of four counts of giving false information to police officers, but because of time already served and other factors, she was set free.
On Thursday, prosecutors filed 281 pages of documents detailing a range of expenses related to her trial -- including airfares and hotel accommodation for witnesses, and payments to experts -- totaling $141,362, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
The State Attorney's Office wants Anthony to pay for its prosecution and investigative costs and intends to address the matter at a hearing Aug. 25.
The $141,362 bill does not cover all expenses associated with Anthony's case.
Earlier in the week, it was revealed that work done by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation came to around $82,000.
Expenses incurred by the Orange County Sheriff's Office, which headed the investigation, have yet to be submitted. Source: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/07/29/florida-prosecutors-bill-140g-for-casey-anthony-case/#ixzz1TkduQIkw

| I think it is unfair. She was found not guilty of murder and child abuse. They dont even send people send convicted murders these types of bills? What about Billy Bob's daughter who was convicted of aggravated manslaughter of a one year old---do you want her to pay her bill too? | |

| Yeah, it sounds unprecedented and I suppose her lawyers will challenge it. acquited ppl should not be required to pay for their tormentors efforts.
They may be posturing for any eventual celebrity money she may make.

I think it's only fair, she knew her daughter was dead but STILL let everybody go on a wild goose chase that cost tens of thousands of dollars, money that could've been spent looking for kids who were REALLY missing and kidnapped, not just ditched and forgotten. And since it was all her own doing, why shouldn't she have to foot the bill on the mess of her own creation?

| I don't have a problem with this and it's not unprecedented for the authorities to charge (bill) someone for "services" such as lost hikers. If she had told the truth, would they have spent the 140K? At least she's not the mother I heard of who got home from her son's funeral to find a bill from the state in the mail for the damage he caused to a guardrail during his fatal car crash. The only problem I might have is charging inmates for their room and board. | |

| No, she was found not guilty. Now I think the bitch is guilty but the jury disagreed so she's a free woman. As far as punishment for lying, her time in jail was applied to that. | |

Except that her lie cost search and rescue organizations over 100 thousand dollars, 3 years in jail doesn't pay that off or give them back the money that wasn't given to help and find ACTUAL victims.

That's the price of the system we have. It's unrealistic for people to expect criminals to cover the cost of investigation & prosecution. Of course criminals lie. If they didn't investigations & trials wouldn't even be necessary. But they investigated, tried & failed. She did her time for the crime for which she was convicted. I understand the horror of this crime but the public has developed an unhealthy obsession with this woman. Karma will eventually come around but from a legal standpoint, this is OVER.

Well it was suggested on another thread that if criminals DO get paid for their stories, they should only get money off it AFTER they compensate their victims financially; I'm all for that, why SHOULDN'T criminals have to repay the money they cost people due to their actions?

I think some of them are justified though; a large part of those search parties were people who took off time from work and lost money because they were trying to help find a child they believed to be missing and alive when they later find out the mother KNEW she was dead all along and still let everybody waste their time and money and efforts. It's a crime to make false reports to the police so I don't know why it shouldn't also be illegal to have child rescue services spend time searching for a child you know isn't lost.
