| It doesn't seem as prevalent today as generations past, but it used to be a very common thing. Did you leave home as a teenager, or do you know anyone who did? In your opinion, should the law permit it (as it permits kids that age to drop out of high school?) | |

| Yeah I've known a few people who cut out at 16. No I don't think the law should permit it. You're a child....and therefore your parents responsibility....until you're 18. | |

This is the thing, at 16 can you get an apartment? Can you buy your own home? We know you can get a job at that age but what about getting your own place to live? I thought nobody rented to people under 18 because they're not legally adults.

| I was a bit older when I left home. I think it should be against the law for someone to leave school at 16. | |

| What if they don't graduate though? Can you take the GED at 16? | |

Yep. I've known kids who had problems and I guess were 'short-term' runaways around that age....but I never left or even had the urge to leave home at 16.

| I don't think it should be legally permissible for a kid to be able to leave home at 16. I realize that some kids that age are difficult to deal with, or come from troubled homes, and so if they and their parents want to make accommodations to have them live elsewhere that's fine, but there's a reason why the age of emancipation is 18 and not 16. | |

In some states the age of emancipation is 21 but it can still be granted before that.

| If kids are so unhappy at that age, they may want to venture out and make their own way. It is a terrible choice if things are fine at home, though.
I have known of a few kids who have done that, and the usualy course of it all is that they go out into the world to stay with a friend's family or relative and then it ends with them wearing out their welcome and heading back home.

| I don't think society is any longer set up to accommodate teenagers leaving home at the age of sixteen and making it. | |
