Since the only pets I've personally kept have been rodents, about 3-4 years. They don't live too long.
Now the Chihuahua that my mom got when we were still living at home went about 20 years. But that "family pet" was actually hers.

I've actually never had my own pet. Some of my siblings have had pets, but they weren't mine.
...Actually wait, I remember having a fish. I got him for my 13th birthday.. I think I had it for a few months before it died. I completely forgot about this fish, I couldn't even tell you it name, or if I ever gave it one.

The two cats we have now. Both are going on 17-18 and are still in pretty good shape other than the problem with Skittles' thyroid.
