Have the terms 'conservative' and 'conservatism' taken on a negative meaning?

People identify themselves how they view themselves. Conservatism get a bad rep because, well, most of the people aligned with being 'conservatives' are crazy ass zealots or nut jobs. If not most, then the prominent conservatives are.
