When you were a kid, were you one to go out and get dirty, or did you tend to stay clean?

In the summer, inner city St. Louis, we would scrape up loose dust from the yard and pack it in little paper bags and have war throwing these bombs at each other. If one broke near you on a brick bldg, it would send up a cloud of dust like an explosion. Of course this stuff stuck to our sweaty bodies and we were a real treat to our mothers when we finally went in for the night.
Even without this game, in the summer we would have dirt 'necklaces' that collected in the creases of our skin.
In my generation, this probably prevented me from geting polio. It has been shown that immunity against that specific disease was increased by exposure to dirt.

I was so clean. I remember vacationing in our summer home in Wisconsin and my parents' friends' kids were always so dirty, with their fingers full of dirt and I would wonder how they stood it.
So ironic now that I am in the dirt all the time with the dirt bikes and it doesn't bother me a bit. And it is very funny that my son gets to see how I was raised when I ride at our track at Dad's. He will offer me a towel with a bottle of water so I can wash my mouth before I drink after doing laps. I am in my 30's and Dad still does his best to make sure I don't have dirt on me. For years my son has been faster than I and Dad tells me not to even try to pass him when it's muddy.

I could usually stay pretty clean, until we got in the sandpile, then forget it. And yet even though I never really got into anything dirty and I got a bath every other day, my dad always found a ring of dirt around my neck in between the baths.

I was always making a mess and dirtying up shirts, dresses and skirts. Ironically I was always trying to get in a picture that was being taken, despite it.

50/50. I didn't mind getting dirty if I was playing and having fun....but I was clean for the most part. I was never a sloppy or grungy kid.
