If you had a baby boy, would you have him circumcised?

I know its really just an American thing and that a lot of people aren't doing it anymore, but there are still quite a few people out there who are for it. I wanted to see just how many people here would still go ahead with having their boy cut at birth. I have a very strong opinion on this myself, and I've noticed on other forums that people tend to be staunchly divided on this issue (like there is really no middle ground). If you believe in circumcision, what are your reasons. If not, why not?

NO, it is an unnecessary genital mutilation, not entirely without grave risk to the boy.
(Loss of a penis is rare but tell that comforting statistic to the boys who lose theirs - for no good reason)

The thing that gets me is that John/Joan case where the boy's genitals were BURNED by a new kind of procedure that the parents for some reason believed would be perfectly fine. If it involves BURNING the skin off, WHY would you think nothing could go wrong with that?

My fiancee is six months pregnant with our son, and honestly the subject hasn't come up at all. I'm no stickler when it comes to cut/uncut, but I have no idea where her head is at on the matter. Guess we'll cross that foreskin bridge when we come to it.

Lol. Well you got less than 3 more months to go, so you might want to bring it up sooner rather than later. Having such an argument in the delivery room probably isn't the best thing if you know what I mean.Chris wrote:Guess we'll cross thatforeskinbridge when we come to it.

How cool Chris. Congrats.
I had my son circumcised and if I were to have another one (which at this point I won't) I would probably do it again. It's a personal choice.

Would you mind elaborating on why exacly, just for shits and giggles.tmontyb wrote:

By the way, it's not really a personal choice, it's a PARENTAL choice. Neonatal circumcision by definition negates the possibility of "personal choice". I just wanted to get that straight to eliminate confusion.

Semantics. You know what I meant.
I could tell you my reasons, but it not something I would really like to talk about in this forum, but I will just say personal experiences guides my decision.
I'm an RN and I've seen the procedure done countless times. There really isn't a medical reason to have done, but you're right, it is PARENTAL choice.

At this stage, there's a good chance that I wouldn't.

I might, I might not. I'd talk it over with the wife. It isn't something I have any strong opinions about one way or the other. As long as it's our decision as a couple, I got no real gripes.

I'm surprised at how many guys gave this answer so far. It's almost like everyone has decided to leave it up to the mother. What if she says: "I don't care, as the father it's your decision". Then what?Forgiveness Man wrote:I might, I might not. I'd talk it over with the wife. It isn't something I have any strong opinions about one way or the other. Well, notice I never said I'd leave it up to her. I said I'd talk it over with her. Meaning we'd decide together. I honestly don't see what's wrong with making decisions about your child with your spouse. We'd talk it over together when the time comes. That's all there is to it. lol

There's nothing wrong with it, I was just curious. Can I take that to mean that you've never really given it a second thought before and will only consider something like that if/when it becomes absolutely necessary to?Forgiveness Man wrote:Well, notice I never said I'd leave it up to her. I've considered it several times actually. lol Not obsessively, but it's not like I've never thought about it.

Honestly, I might just leave it alone. I'm not for nor against circumcision at all. If somehow I decide to do it, cool....but I prob. won't even bother.

I'd consort with the OB, asking what he or she recommends.

@B: I'm fairly fluid about it. It's not as if I got some close friend consensus on the issue. It's an issue my wife and I will deal with if and when the time comes that we have a son. Since I don't really feel there's much moral issues either way, it's not really something I am bringing some huge bias to. I feel it's fine if we do get it done and it's fine if we decide not to. Whatever decision we reach, it'll likely come after discussing it together, and not some decision I've made before I've even entered the relationship. lol Simple as that.

If the doctors thought it was a good idea, then I'd consider it but I wouldn't insist upon it.
