The only time was a divorce about a hundred years ago. Would have been one more time but it was dismissed early.

Yeah but it wasn't like on TV, where you're in a courtroom and the judge looks down on you from his high bench. I met with the judge in his office one on one and that was it.

Never stood before one for a criminal case. (except as the arresting cop making testimony in the witness chair)
Had a name change which required going before a judge who was on the bench and I was standing with my friend of the court (I was under 21) and lawyer.
No lawyers involved in my divorce. All of us getting divorced that day went into a conference room around a large table, judge at the head and each answered questions as the judge read our cases. Judge actually made a change on the typed case by hand. (They automatically change the woman's name back to maiden and my wife wanted to keep my name).

Yep. Had to fight a speeding ticket. He dismissed the case.
