SACRAMENTO, California — California's governor has signed a bill that that will prevent local governments from banning male circumcision.

Gov. Jerry Brown's office announced Sunday that the Democrat signed the bill which was written in response to a ballot measure proposed in San Francisco.

Backers of a ban collected more than 7,700 signatures to put a measure on the November ballot in San Francisco to outlaw the circumcision of most male children. It was later blocked by a judge.

They had argued that circumcision is an unnecessary surgery that can lead to sexual and health problems later in life.

Those against the ban say it is an important religious practice for many Jews and Muslims, and that it can reduce the risk of cancer and sexually transmitted diseases.

As far as I'm concerned, California has a LOT more important problems to deal with than this.

Since circumcision is forever I'd say it's very important to the ones having it done to them.

Well, is circumcision not an option? If parents do not want their newborn circumcized, isn't that choice honored? Any Californians on this forum who can answer this?

It's fine to seek out men who are cut. Nothing wrong with personal preference. It's not fine to make that decision for them as children. His penis. His foreskin. His choice. This isn't something that should be a parental "right". And it makes no difference how many issues Cali or any other state might be dealing with. The rights of people (in this case, infant boys) are not diminished by that.

But to the guys: Think you're suffering post-traumatic stress from circumcision?

A ban on circumcision wasn't ever going to pan out anyway, and I think the people who proposed the idea knew it. This was just an outrageous attempt to try and get the word out about their anti-circumcision platform.

Anti-Circumcision is a funny platform, especially considering those who usually take such a position.
