We got cable in 1980. At first it wasn't a box, it was this primitive switch thing that Manhattan Cable gave out. Eventually, it was a box the you had to manually change.

I think it was 1988. My parents got service from this really cheap cable company that didn't have a lot of channels. Then later I went over a friends house whose parents had service from a better cable company that had 2x as many channels. I bugged my parents about it for about a month until they finally cancelled the service and got the other company's.

This was something like our "remote" control. It was as remote as the length of the cord that connected to the cable box.

I think I was born into cable. My parents didn't spring for HBO or the Disney channel, though.
