| I'd like to get everybody's opinion on this, what do you think of peace signs? (Of course we can guess what Shale's answer will be) Is this offensive to you? | |

| I feel the popularity of the image has cheapened it in some ways. | |

| My mother comes from the Vietnam generation and she says that anybody who was there, from that time, especially the Veterans, are offended by it. A large part of it, it seems, has to do with the whole Hanoi Jane thing when she got a lot of soldiers killed, which I never got. So she told me to look it up, problem is the report I found, which came from a site that their whole duty is to get to the truth of popular myths and stories, says while she posed for the pictures and blindly believed the POWs who said they weren't being tortured and all that, that what she did was NOT traitorous and that in fact several of the men listed as being the ones she personally betrayed, have said time and again it didn't happen, and that they are tired of having their names put on a myth. | |

| I have very mixed feelings about it. In the 60's I was a little more into it, and often wore jewelry with the symbol. But I was not anti-soldier, either (and don't think the peace-loving hippies were always tolerant ~ spitting on the soldiers was sickening). I don't feel the same about it today. | |

| I just never really cared for it, with or without knowing the history about it. I think it's more of an aesthetic thing. | |

I suppose that goes back to Vietnam when the people who primarily did wear peace signs were the hippies and the ones spitting on soldiers and calling them baby killers. That's the way my mother explains it anyway; she says anybody who served in Vietnam is going to be offended by it.

There are a lot of generalities there and it would require some citation to see if any of it floats.
There are Vietnam Veterans Against the War - they may not find a peace symbol offensive.
There were news accounts of returning vets in the day being yelled at, derided and even spit on, but of the thousands that came back, how many? News accounts are not surveys or accurate portrayal - they just take headline grabbing moments, often out of context to the norm. That's why it is 'news.'
And, no one has been able to pin down 'Hippies,' a term the news media gave to a certain element rebelling against mainstream culture (who happened to be unshorn & unshaven and wore outlandish clothing). I was confused for a Hippie, but I don't recall ever signing on (Coulda happened when I was stoned, IDK) But I do know that I never showed disrespect to any veterans of that war - despite eventually seeing that it was a tragedy caused by US. May have helped that I too was a veteran.

| I don't think they're fashionable, but I don't have a problem with them either. | |
