Do you ever take off your shoes when going to visit a relative or friend that has carpeting through out their home? Do any of them insist on it?

No, and no. And I don't usually remove mine at my own door unless I know they've got crap on the bottom.

It's been a long time, probably not since I was a kid, that I visited somebody's house that had a "no shoes" rule. But it wouldn't be a problem.

I have an aunt who's like that, and even my roommates will for the most part enforce it too. We take off our shoes at doorway.

The apartments down here have those walkway balconies and it is very common to see shoes outside doors all the time.
I am barefoot in my apartment all the time unless actually going out or just coming in. Don't take shoes off at the door, except for kicking off flip-flops but soon as I get in.
