Free samples for adults only

Kraft this week launched a tasty, free sampling station for adults only.

The vending machine, debuted Wednesday in Chicago, dispenses Jell-O desserts activated by facial age detection technology that will only give free dessert samples to adults.

Here's how the technology works: A camera on top of the machine scans a customer's face within a 25-foot radius of the machine. If the machine detects an adult, the machine will produce a free sample.

If a child is detected in the area, the machine shuts down, asks the child to step away and only returns to life once the child is removed.

People's images are not saved, according to a Kraft statement. The machine uses them to compare and analyze the person's facial features in the image to determine their age range.

The iSample Temptations by Jell-O machines will be displayed at the Shedd Aquarium from Dec. 14-Jan. 19. Sample flavors include key lime pie, lemon merengue pie, raspberry cheesecake, strawberry cheesecake, double chocolate pie and French silk pie

The executives in charge of this marketing campaign are clearly not parents. To place such a machine in a family environment such as the Shedd Aquarium and exclude children is bad business.

I think it is a bad idea in general, but should be in a place that has mostly adult foot traffic.

I don't really see the point in such technology, especially since the article doesn't imply that these jell-O products are laced with any kind of adult substance.

I guess they want adults to start associating the brand with enjoyable flavors appealing to adults. But banning kids, so-to-speak, is not the smart way to go about it.

Seems pretty pointless IMO.

If I had to guess I bet they just don't want to hire people to prepare & pass out the samples. This way they can offer samples of their product for as long as the location is open. But they know kids will gather around the machine emptying it out all the time. They just want the potential paying customers to get the samples.

the temptations product is trying to promote itself as "adult" while the pudding/gelatin products are "child-like". the commercials are different. Temptations is supposed to be a privilege and a decadent type of thing that cannot be appreciated by kids. Like someone else said.. put it in a bar then, or a casino lol
