It's been said that homosexuality exists in the animal kingdom....have you ever known or seen a gay animal?

Re: Gay Animals
Yep. My little shih tzu. He has what appears to be a maltese/poodle mix boyfriend down the street that's constantly up here. I wondered why he had the need to go out so often for a while. Then I found out.

Re: Gay Animals
A friend of mine has a dog who I think was bisexual, because he'll try to hump every other dog he comes in contact with (males included.) I think it's hysterical, but my friend is very sensitive about it.

Re: Gay Animals
Never met one. Always was skeptical of such claims as it is considering other things I've read. Wouldn't matter to me either way.

Re: Gay Animals
When I was a kid a friend of mine had a collie that was gay. He would only hump male dogs and was always greeted female dogs with a little lick on the snout and would turn and walk away. We got such a kick out of this.

Re: Gay Animals
Yes. My friend Chuck's dog is a lesbian. She tries to mount other female dogs. I also had a girl friend years ago that had two male cats (leo and charlie) who would take turns humping each other. Everyone laughed!
With regard to gay animals outside of pets, generally the "higher" the species is on the intellegence scale (smart "birds & mammals") the more likely they are to have gay and bisexual members of their species as a regular occurance. The only exception of that I can think of is sheep. Approximately 10% of male sheep are gay and will only mount other rams. Nobody knows why exactly, but the state is remarkably similar to the percentage of human gays. Almost all dolphins are obviously multi-sexual and both sexes have often been seeing soliciting sex from either sex, other family members, and even other species including sea turtles and human beings. One third of all Laysan albatrosses observed pairings were female couples that have had lesbian monogamous relationships lasting up to 19 years. Bonobos (one of the great apes) are known to be fully bisexual (both males and females). But homosexuality is common amongst all the great apes. Male elephants develop stronger and longer lasting homosexual relationships than heterosexual relationships. Giraffes are more likely to be gay than straight! Penguins, hyenas and male lions will also occasionally pair with the same sex. Homosexuality is just one of those facts of life sometimes!

Re: Gay Animals
humping in dogs is a form of showing dominance.. it isnt sexual--I worked for a rescue and saw this often.
HOWEVER, i was at the zoo one day and saw one orangatang giving oral sex to another one---THAT i thought was hysterical... especially when the little kid next to me asked his mother what was happening! lol

Re: Gay Animals
Humping in dogs is OFTEN a form of dominance, depending on the situation and the dog's personality. Similar to how men will occasionally rape each other in prison but they aren't necessarily "gay". But SOMETIMES it is purely sexual (ie: if the dog has a non-dominant personality, or is in heat when they are doing it). Same things with cats! Sometimes dogs will hump their owner's leg if given the oppertunity and few dogs express "dominance" over their owner. A lot of times, they are just doing it because if feels good and they don't know any better. Also, when they spend hours on end licking themselves "down there", they're not just cleaning themselves as people would prefer to believe. They're essentially masturbating!wants2laugh wrote:humping in dogs is a form of showing dominance.. it isnt sexual--I worked for a rescue and saw this often.

Dogs (like some men, in fact,) will hump anything with a hole.

Re: Gay Animals
While it's true it CAN be a sign of dominance, it's not the case every time. My dog doesn't like the girls. And while I haven't conducted an investigation, I'm pretty sure there are some holes there somewhere.

. . . Or doesn't move, depending on whether or not the target is still alive or not, and their preference as such. .. (but I digress off topic.)

Re: Gay Animals
I believe it does, but at the same time I think it is more due to whats available when the critter gets the urge. However right now I am reading "We Bought A Zoo", and the writer maintains that the percentage of gay animals approach about the same percentages as in humans.
