On the advice of Joan Crawford I don't keep wire coat hangers, but I'm told they are good for beating children.

No, wooded hangers are worse. Take it from one who was on the receiving end.

I have one that is stretched out so I can use it to reach down and grab clothes/socks, etc., that occasionally fall behind the washer and dryer, which are stuffed in a closet in my house.
I also use a twisted wire coat hanger to string up the IV bag of fluids when I have to give my cat his dialysis treatment; I hook one end into the bag's slotted-edge, then hand the other end on the shower rod, sit on the toilet lid with Shadow and off we go!
