The Nurturant Parent Model is a parenting style which envisions a family model where children are expected to explore their surroundings with protection from their parents.

  • True discipline is not a matter of strict obedience, but of respect and compassion.
  • The world is no more inherently hostile than it is inherently friendly; it merely commands respect.
  • Respect and compassion can only be taught by example.

The Strict Father Model of parenting is one which places strong value on discipline as a means to survive and thrive in a harsh world.

  • That children learn through reward and punishment, as in operant conditioning.
  • That children become more self-reliant and more self-disciplined by having strict parents.
  • That the parent, particularly the father, is meant to mete out rewards for good behavior as well as punish bad behavior.

Both models have validity and whether one is used more than the other depends on the recipient. Some kids could respond to nurturing better, drawing on their own self-discipline while others may require a firm hand and imposed discipline.

Depends on the child. I don't think you can totally parent a child from any textbook standard.

Both ends are too extreme. Mix up the two.
