    You can tell how the older ones here learned to read, the rule of Phonics is at work here. "When two vowels go walking the first one says its own name the second one remains silent". Here the A does sound but much less than the first vowel which is the E.

    If I'm talking about butter pecan ice cream, I'll say pee kahn. If I'm talking about the pecans themselves or pecan pie....I'll say pee can.
