| When I was a kid I visited my grandparents who lived on a farm. Got to hoe weeds out of the garden, feed the chickens, shell peas & butterbeans (Lima beans) on the porch and pick the veggies, including okra and hot peppers (not fun). Fed the milk cows and eventually learned how to milk them. Used an outhouse and bathed in the pond, rode the plow mule back to my uncle's house thru the woods, while he took the plow in his pickup truck. There are good benefits to living on a farm but lots of hard work involved - at least back in the day of the family farm. | |

| Farming is what most of my ancestors did and that also included my step grandfather and his whole side of the family. | |

| Raised on a dairy farm. Didn't want to live my younger and middle adult years there, but it's likely we will move back to my family farm in time. | |

| I wouldn't mind trying to live in the country with some property but not as a farmer. | |

| My cousin has a farm... they sell chickens and pigs.. have horses. The one thing she did that I just could not understand was allowing her child to get close to a "pet" pig. He used to sleep with it and everything. Then several years later, the boy was like 9yrs old... she said, "Said good bye to Sammy, he's gonna be our easter dinner". I kid you not... they ATE the kid's pet pig! IMO it is one thing to kill what you eat--- that is natural and part of life, so i DO understand the lesson for the child there. But to allow him to become emotionally attached to the thing for years is just heartbreaking!
There is no way I would ever live on a farm

That is truly sick. Do you know if the kid is OK now. Loss of empathy can really be fucked up. Hope he takes out his parents instead of total strangers if he becomes a psycho killer.
There is a movie The Warriors Way, where the Ninja master gives the kid a dog, saying that is your only friend. Then later the kid has to kill the dog. That should be the stuff of fiction - not IRL.
