$1 million lottery winner won't quit waitress job By msnbc.com staff
One 21-year-old Florida waitress has no plans to quit her day job – even after winning a $1 million lottery prize.
"No way," Alexandra Chaar told Florida Lottery officials on Wednesday. "I love where I work."
Chaar, who works at a Mexican restaurant in Clearwater Beach, Fla., said she bought her ticket in the state's $1 million Monopoly Scratch-Off Game at a local food mart.
"I kept going back to the same store to buy them; the people who work there got to know me," Chaar told the lottery commission. "They said that up to this point, their store had never had any big winners, but I just had this lucky feeling."
Chaar chose the one-time, lump-sum payment for her winnings in the amount of $700,000.
According to Tampa Bay Online, Chaar told lottery officials she was a straight-A student at St. Petersburg College and planned to use the money to pay for college.
Until then, she’ll keep working for tips.

| I wouldn't quit my job either, $1 million doesn't go too far these days.
I'd keep working, while putting myself through the schooling of my choice, then open up my own business.

| Well, I'm inclined to say she crazy, but in reality, 700k isn't a whole lot of money to live the rest of your life on....unless you had some extreme budgeting. But being a waitress, that job would've been bye bye for me. I would've used to money to set myself up for something else | |

| She can pay off a lot of bills with that & have some security but she's smart to keep working. I'd get some training or education to get a better job too. | |

| I'm thinking that she probably likes her waitressing job. 700k isn't enough to set someone for life, but it is more than enough to use as a stepping stone to help arrange a bigger and better career. | |

| She appears young, so a million dollars wouldn't be enough to live on.
What she can and should do with it is to buy good health insurance

| It's good to be practical, but I would be out of there like I just won 20 million. That 700k would stretch out a long time if she kept her previous lifestyle and didn't try to jump into a higher class. | |

| $700,000 divided by 20 years is $35,000 per year. She should be able to afford a better life style (if she wanted) and a comfortable retirement but she's wise not to just kick back and live off that money. Our state lottery has an instant game with a top prize of $1,000 per week for life. I wouldn't stop working for that either. There are (were) some games for $5K per week. Then I would retire. | |
