    face palm

Sorry girls, I just picked a number that was the norm of obesity for most women who eat too much fat/calories and don't exercise. The ones that are far too common in the population.

Not all of them have medical reasons for weight gain - just poor nutrition practices - which I see at the fast food restaurants that they frequent.

You're forgiven. Often people see an overweight person and think they are that way because the over eat or are too lazy to move. Part of it, aside from those you see at the fast food restaurants (hey, what are you doing there? Smile) I think is due to Media images. We are told by quacks like Dr Oz who make a fortune on touting diets and various methods to lose weight based on the idea that it is always the person's "fault."

The important thing according to my doctors, is that the vitals are okay: heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol etc.

I lost ALL faith in diets after I saw something on the TV about 10 years ago, there was this woman on saying she had previously told her watchers that this was the ideal diet of only healthy foods like fish, vegetables, dairy, grain, etc., and then she said 'I apologize, this diet can kill you'. And I was just like what the fuck?! if a diet can kill you I don't want part of any of them. To hell with that.

Yeah, thru exercise and a 'low fat' diet I have been able to maintain my weight as I aged, but cholesterol was high. So I looked at the reduced fat milk and figured I still took in a lot of fat & cholesterol. Made a diet change and this month my cholesterol has come down from the 210 it was running.

Now the new thing is discovering my B/P is consistenly high. Damn, if it ain't one thing it's another.

There is nothing wrong with diets per se as long as they are not crazy. But when it comes to dieting one size does not fit all so whatever works for one won't necessarily work for another. Everyone has to find their own way in this.

Regarding elevated BP and cholesterol, I cheat a bit. I take an ayurvedic herb supplement called Mukta Vati for BP and it works like a charm. I have been taking them for 10 years and they haven't killed me so I think they're pretty safe.

For cholesterol, I don't really like high fat or fried foods so I don't eat those but I take Omega3 fish oil and Red Rice Yeast. You do have to be careful with the RRY because it can cause problems. It's something you don't want to take for any length of time without stopping for awhile.

The BP and cholesterol were fine before I went on the Prednisone. It's one of those iatrogenic things; an illness is caused by the treatment of another.

The kid with the homemade lunch in general was doing much better than the chicken nuggets though, there is just such a thing as common sense when it comes to eating. I would be very suspicious of a school that thought they could be more nutritious than a turkey sandwich.
