Oh my God, my mother and I are watching that My Crazy Obsession show on TLC, first people on is a married couple with five thousand Cabbage Patch dolls that they refer to as their children, do the voices for all of them, treat them like real kids, build an amusement park for them, etc. Maybe I'm alone here but I think those little bastards are creepy. I don't know why or how they ever caught on, or how they're still popular with anybody.

That's because you are not an 80's baby. Cabbage Patch was the shit! I had two dolls, Trixie and Diana. I loved them. If I can find a vintage Cabbage Patch, I will get it.

Re: Cabbage Patch dolls
Technically I am, and I still don't get it. There was one I saw when I was about 8 that interested me, because it was one that ate things, any doll with a gimmick interested me like if it ate or stood on its head or talked, but I never got it because there were stories of the dolls biting off kids' fingers. And any one after that or before I found weird as hell.

Re: Cabbage Patch dolls
My husband had damn fun picking up our daughter's first Cabbage Patch Doll way back then. I had one ordered at JC Penney's and when he went to pick it up he was approached by several women offering him more than we paid for it. But this was our girl's main Christmas gift, and I remember him saying that he held on to the box for dear life until he got to the car.
She ended up with three over time. I still have two of them, one being an astronaut. I don't find them particularly cute myself.
That's weird and creepy-ass about that couple, though. I'm glad that they found each other to share that macabre obsession with.

Re: Cabbage Patch dolls
5000 dolls qualify as an obsession, but if it makes them happy there's no harm in it. Sounds like it's something they enjoy doing together & that's always good.
Now the Garbage Pail Kids...THAT was creepy.

Re: Cabbage Patch dolls
I saw the same show and if the dolls were just dolls in a collection fine, I mean I collect ducks and have ducks all over the house, but those people were stark raving nuts. They even had an amusement park for the dolls. Took one of the dolls shopping with them and expected the sales person to talk to it. Read a bedtime story to the dolls , that is taking an obsession too far.

Thank you, and taking that Kevin doll everywhere and declaring him a brother to their REAL daughter, think how bad it's had to be for her, to have her parents think these 5000 dolls are their children, SHE was their child, SHE has a child. Like my mother said, if they didn't have any children it wold be one thing, they have a daughter and a grandchild, so it is different.

Re: Cabbage Patch dolls
What's scarier is they meet other people like them and bring their 'kids' together for play dates, hence their own amusement park.

My daughter had one. A shit load of Beanie Babies too. I'm glad we didn't buy them as an investment because the bottom sure dropped out of that market!

Re: Cabbage Patch dolls
I saw them on Anderson and it was a little weird. Although the doll they made for him was cute, and I wouldn't mind having one myself....keyword: ONE.

My mother has a friend who was neighbors with a woman who collected Beanie babies for years, and she finally sold her collection off one by one on Ebay and raked in $80,000.
