http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/09/homophobia-homosexuality-gay_n_1412846.htmlHomophobics should consider a little self-reflection, suggests a new study finding those individuals who are most hostile toward gays and hold strong anti-gay views may themselves have same-sex desires, albeit undercover ones.
The prejudice of homophobia may also stem from authoritarian parents, particularly those with homophobic views as well, the researchers added.
"This study shows that if you are feeling that kind of visceral reaction to an out-group, ask yourself, 'Why?'" co-author Richard Ryan, a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester, said in a statement. "Those intense emotions should serve as a call to self-reflection."
The research, published in the April 2012 issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, reveals the nuances of prejudices like homophobia, which can ultimately have dire consequences. [The 10 Most Destructive Human Behaviors]
"Sometimes people are threatened by gays and lesbians because they are fearing their own impulses, in a sense they 'doth protest too much,'" Ryan told LiveScience. "In addition, it appears that sometimes those who would oppress others have been oppressed themselves, and we can have some compassion for them too, they may be unaccepting of others because they cannot be accepting of themselves."
Ryan cautioned, however, that this link is only one source of anti-gay sentiments.
Hidden homosexuality
In four studies, the researchers looked at the discrepancies between what people say about their sexual orientation and their implicit sexual orientation based on a reaction-time test. The studies involved college students from Germany and the United States.
For the implicit measure, students had to categorize words and pictures flashed onto a computer screen into "gay" or "straight" groups. Words included "gay," "straight," "homosexual" and "heterosexual," while the pictures showed straight and gay couples. Before each trial, participants were primed with the word "me" or "others" flashed momentarily onto a computer screen. The researchers said quicker reaction time for "me" and "gay," and a slower association of "me" with "straight" would indicate said an implicit gay orientation. [Why Gay Parents May Be the Best Parents]
In another experiment, the researchers measured implicit sexual orientation by having participants choose to browse same-sex or opposite-sex photos on a computer screen.
Questionnaires also teased out the parenting style the participants were exposed to, with students asked how much they agreed or disagreed with statements such as: "I felt controlled and pressured in certain ways;" and "I felt free to be who I am." To gauge homophobia in a household, students responded to items such as, "It would be upsetting for my mom to find out she was alone with a lesbian" or "My dad avoids gay men whenever possible."
Participants indicated their own level of homophobia, both overt and implicit; in word-completion tasks, students wrote down the first three words that came to mind when prompted with some of the words' letters. Students were primed at some point with the word "gay" to see how that impacted the amount of aggressive words used.
Controlling parents
In all of the studies, participants who reported supportive and accepting parents were more in touch with their implicit sexual orientation, meaning it tended to jibe with their outward sexual orientation. Students who indicated they came from authoritarian homes showed the biggest discrepancy between the two measures of sexual orientation.
"In a predominately heterosexual society, 'know thyself' can be a challenge for many gay individuals," lead author Netta Weinstein, a lecturer at the University of Essex in the United Kingdom, said in a statement. "But in controlling and homophobic homes, embracing a minority sexual orientation can be terrifying."[5 Ways to Foster Self-Compassion in Your Child]
Those participants who reported their heterosexuality despite having hidden same-sex desires were also the most likely to show hostility toward gay individuals, including self-reported anti-gay attitudes, endorsement of anti-gay policies and discrimination such as supporting harsher punishments for homosexuals.
The research may help to explain the underpinnings of anti-gay bullying and hate crimes, the researchers note. People in denial about their own sexual orientation, perhaps a denial fostered by authoritarian and homophobic parents, may feel a threat from other gay and lesbian individuals. Lashing out may ultimately be an indicator of the person's own internal conflict with sexual orientation.
This inner conflict can be seen in some high-profile cases in which anti-gay public figures are caught engaging in same-sex acts, the researchers say. For instance, evangelical preacher and anti-gay-marriage advocate Ted Haggard was caught in a gay sex scandal in 2006. And in 2010, prominent anti-gay activist and co-founder of conservative Family Research Council George Rekers was reportedly spotted in 2010 with a male escort rented from Rentboy.com. According to news reports, the escort confirmed Rekers is gay.
"We laugh at or make fun of such blatant hypocrisy, but in a real way, these people may often themselves be victims of repression and experience exaggerated feelings of threat," Ryan said. "Homophobia is not a laughing matter. It can sometimes have tragic consequences," as was the case in the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay man.

I think it's generally one of a couple things, they're either deeply closeted or in denial or they're so arrogant & superior they believe their way is the only right & acceptable one. But we've certainly seen this to be true in our elected officials & those who stand in pulpits & rail every Sunday. So yeah there's validity to the study.

This is why we need more prominent homosexual ppl to come out of the closet, until it is realized that minority sexual orientations are normal, just as they have always been. Then there wouldn't be so many ppl taught to hate themselves and others just because they deviated from the norm.
Altho many black folks hate the comparison of gay rights to the black civil rights movement, they are the same. Hate is hate and ignorance is ignorance. There is still racial hatred but not as bad as it was in the days of segregation. I am of the first generation of white kids that actually grew up with exposure to black kids. You learn to see the commonality of ppl goes beyond racial difference.
The same will happen with different sexual orientations, when all are accepted and known to be commonplace. We have that in large metropolitan areas - every str8 person here has gay friends and vice versa. No big deal. It's mostly those backwater places where the lies flourish because everyone is
afraid to come forward with the truth.

I agree. I do wish more would come out. I will always believe it has to be their decision. I hate outing. It's easy for a straight person to say this person or that one should come out but they are the ones who have to deal with the consequences or backlash after the fact. It's a damn double edged sword. But if some very high profile people would come out I believe we could see the doors fly open. It would take away the fear they shouldn't even be feeling. And I do believe that there are people out there with more money than they will ever spend & nothing to lose but the adulation they've grown accustomed to having. It's those people who frustrate the hell out of me. They could open the doors for everyone else & maybe the eyes of some very bigoted people.
And I also agree that hate is hate. Civil rights belong to us all. John Becker (Truth Wins Out/Freedom to Marry) wrote an amazing column about this.
"However, where LGBT issues and racial issues intersect, I must emphatically draw an equivalency in order to make a point that I'm particularly passionate about: people on both sides -- liberal and conservative, pro-LGBT and anti-LGBT -- actively avoid equating gay rights with civil rights. Some even go so far as to condemn those who make any association between the two. This avoidance is dishonest, insulting, and demeaning to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people of all racial, ethnic, and cultural identities. It must stop immediately; there are no three ways about it.
Make no mistake: I am not suggesting that race, sexual orientation, and gender identity/expression are in any way the same. I am also not attempting to equate the collective histories of racial and sexual minority groups or the personal experiences of any members of these groups. To do so would be foolish. What I am saying -- no, declaring -- is that the struggle for African-American rights and the struggle for LGBT rights are two fronts in the same battle. Both involve a minority group singled out by the majority for discrimination, unequal treatment, and persecution on the basis of an intrinsic and immutable characteristic. Both movements arose when a critical mass of courageous people decisively pushed back against bigotry and institutionalized oppression for the first time. And in both cases, the work of achieving legislative, judicial, and cultural equality is ongoing. So while the details may be different, at a fundamental level, the fight for African-American civil rights and LGBT civil rights are both part of the same civil rights movement."
For those interested I highly recommend reading the article in its entirety which can be found here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-becker/lgbt-rights-are-civil-rights_b_1368381.html?ref=tw

Everytime one of these "studies" is done, science becomes a little bit bigger of a joke. lol So anti-gay people are secretly gay. I guess the next thing to prove is that anti-religious people are secretly repressing their inner belief in Christian teaching.

Umm, no. Quite frankly, you can't force people to like or to accept anything. Whatever the reason is, that's on them but I wouldn't make a blanket statement saying that because you don't like a gay person it makes you a closet homosexual. Or even suggest it. There are people out there who don't like gay people period and they are ENTITLED to do so. There are people who don't like black people, Asians, women, etc and they are ENTITLED to do so. You're just not supposed to discriminate against anyone because of it. That's what the Civil Rights Act was about and that's what my people marched for. So what if Bubba thinks you're a fag. If he prevents you from getting a job, that's when you have a problem.

That's not what the article says. It says that there is a correlation between those who are most hostile towards homosexuality and latent homosexual orientation. And that's really not much of a revelation considering all of the anti-gay, conservative politicians who ended up being undercover queers! Do you really need to see just how extensive that list is again, or have I made my point already?Forgiveness Man wrote:Everytime one of these "studies" is done, science becomes a little bit bigger of a joke. lol So anti-gay people are secretly gay.
