Would you do anything (like alert someone, try to divert their attention or even physically restrain them) to prevent them from succeeding, even if they swore you to secrecy or asked you to not interfere?

I would talk to them about it, but it is their decision - respect that.

I would actually do whatever it took to prevent it.

Depends on the situation. Is the person depressed after they've been dumped or are they looking to end their suffering from a terminal illness? If it's the former I'll probably make a call. Either way, I am NOT going to try and take the gun away from them.

Yes, there are extenuating circumstances to why the person might want to kill themself.
I once contemplated doing it just to see what was on the other side. That scared me because it was in the '70s and I had connections to drugs that could have done it. So, I left that space.
I think I will off myself in a few years (20 is a few years at my age). I am OK with aging but still not ready to give up everything that I have grown accustomed to. As long as I can get around, (ride my bike) have my wits about me and enjoy life with just the normal pains you get used to, I will hang around. But I firmly believe in quality of life over quantity.
So, there! Shale has confided that he is going to kill himself. Now don't search out my ISP and kick my door down. I'm fine right now (just got laid last Friday)
But, for the record, I ain't stupid. I know you can't burn a charcoal hibachi in a sealed bathroom. (And, being vegetarian I don't barbeque).

I agree it depends. If it's over a breakup or an emotional upset hell no I'm not gonna just sit back & let that happen. Bad as it can feel at the time that stuff is temporary. It honestly will pass at least to a bearable point & we're gonna talk. If it's a terminal illness, things change. It isn't my place to tell someone they have to endure unbearable pain or a future of entrapment in a no longer functioning body, especially when I have no intention of that myself. So I respect that.
