Have you ever belonged to, or attended, a support group? If so, for what?

Re: Support groups
i attend a grief/loss support group... since the death of my sister.
sometimes i think it does more harm than good tho... and there is someone there who i find to be disrespectful and not so kind to some people there. Last week i had it out with him... what is the point in going to a group if u are going to be judged or criticzied for your comments?

Re: Support groups
I think they're fine as long as it helps someone. But if it becomes more about paying dues & buying merchandise then not so much.

Re: Support groups
I attended a few meetings. After the second meeting I asked what we could be doing to better deal with the issues we all seemed so anxious to share.
I was told that was why we were sharing. Great I said, but what can we do?
I just couldn't bring myself to sit in on another pity party where the folks were set on blaming themselves for their situation.
I have always found it better to empower myself and control the issue rather than vice-versa.

Re: Support groups
well... me talking about my sis helps me. and me helping other people helps me.
but i did go with a guy who was a drunk. and while he was going to AA, i was going to Al-anon (for family/spouses of alcholics). When i was at my meeting, they told me that i had to improve MYSELF and work on MYSELF. it was a good concept i guess, everyone needs work. but i was told that if I became a better person, then he would see this and want to improve himself and stop drinking. I was pissed and offended! i was like, "he drank LONG before he met me. his drinking has nothin to do with me---he's a drunk. that is what they do. I was a good person who cared about people--- how could they tell me that i had something wrong with me? the problem was his!"
so to me, the person in the relationship that was trying to help, was actually taking/accepting blame for the actions of the drunk--- NOT right!

Re: Support groups
I think Rodney Dangerfield was onto something, there needs to be a Losers Anonymous support group.
