Old article I found

http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2010/10/07/ny-officials-take-soda-out-of-food-stamp-program/

NY taking soda off the food stamp shopping list. What's your take on that? Should soda count as food or is it a luxury?

It's food, like it or not, it's a large part of most people's diets and very little is going to change that.

I think its stupid and Bloomberg needs to leave office. Food stamps are for the purchase of food. Anything that can be consumed for nourishment ( no matter how "unhealthy") is food. The only thing that should be banned, and is, is alcohol and cigarettes.

It is not food. It is worthless shit with NO NUTRITIVE VALUE.

Food assistance should be just that, food to keep ppl from starving in the U.S. Personally, I liked the idea of 'commodity food' that some states had in the '70s. It was nutritious food that was produced in the U.S. so it had the benefit of helping our food production while feeding the needy. Had such stuff as powdered non-fat milk, blocks of cheese, rolled oats, beans, rice. Nutritious stuff that ppl could live off of.

Yes. It may be classified as 'junk food,' but sustenance it is.
