Is this happening where you are?

Now that school's back in session, my sister in Iowa told my mom that where they are, the whole school has done away with all textbooks and now are using iPads to load everything on, and in the church they have done away with all hymn books and just put the words up on a screen for everyone to read. Is this happening anywhere else or is it just in the corn capital of this country?

Well, I don't go to church (too many lightning storms start up as I get near one)

I also haven't gone to school in half a century, so I wouldn't know but it sounds like progress to me. Maybe paper textbooks will disappear into the digital age like so many other things of generations past.

I am not involved in the school system but I never heard of that. I can picture some Prot Churches doin that but I don't see my Church going that route anytime soon. I am tired of them trying to phase out books. I don't want to look at a freaking screen all day.

Really! I think there's something wrong with anybody who does.

Don't know about the schools but even way back when I gave the church thing a shot they were doing the screen thing then. That's been years.

I know for a fact some churches here have gone to using screens for hymns. But the ones I have seen it at (three) use books too. They just don't have enough for everybody. I guess it is a method to save money. I think it is more personable to read from the screen vs. heads all buried in the books.

I know one school here has iPads, but not to totally replace text books. They are issuing them to 8Th graders (not my son's school) and the hope is for them to last through high school. I don't like that concept because that is a mighty expensive device to be loaned. Just think about what the parents will do if they have to replace a lost one. And you KNOW it will be happening.

Especially when this is a one size fits all solution to 'obsolete' text books and that includes the kids of poor parents who do not have the money to replace an iPad if something happens to it.

Right, Super. I am not sure how this could ever completely go well other than a private school district where parents are forced to put a security deposit down.
