I'm pondering getting a cat sometime this year or next. So what about you, got any pets?

A 16 month old Dobie/Golden Lab mix. The epitome of both breeds. Very temperamental... one minute he'll be playful and affectionate like labs tend to be... then he'll hear a sudden sound and become militantly watchful like a dobie.

Re: Do you have any pets?
No, I don't have a pet. My pet has me! I have a Chihuahua. Growing up, my parents always had Chis and I knew that is what I wanted when it was time to get a dog. And I just adore him so much. And yes, I am one of those insane dog people! I know it is totally uncool, but he is the perfect dog for my family and we could not love him any more than we do. I work from home so we are not often apart, and he really is attached to me. But it is cool that he really does love my son too. If my son gets up in the morning or comes home from school, and does not acknowledge our pup right away, the pup will come to him seeking attention.
Doyen, I can only imagine what it was like for you to lose your dog. When you get your kitty, you will have to tell us all about it. I love hearing new pet stories!! It is such a fun time, as a person gets to know a new little pet.
Two summers ago, we got two birds. Cockatiels. We were so excited and we really liked them. But, really, in the end, birds were not a good fit for us. They liked to be out of their cage a lot and I did not like the bird poop issue. So, we gave it almost a year, and then sold them. I really don't like people that rush into pet decisions and end up giving them away, but that is kind of how we were with the birds. So, it will always be a regret of mine that we got them.

LMAO! Isn't that always the case? I had a german shepherd as a kid, and boy oh boy...he ran the house. Like all dogs, he always wanted to go for car rides. When we'd leave, he'd get this sassy "I KNOW you're not about to leave me here!" look on his face. The funny thing about dogs too is that they almost be defiant like kids. One day Major (his name) was being very chatty and would not stop barking and my mom get annoyed, and told him to shut up. He looked right at her and kept barking. She told him to shut up again and again, he looked at her and barked. Finally she walked up on him, demanding that he shut up...and it was the funniest thing I ever saw. It was like a showdown. He didn't bark at that moment, but the look on his face was very "who do you think YOU are to tell me not to bark." LOL!
He also used to bust me. As a teenager, when I'd sneak out at night to meet my boyfriend, he'd go running to my mom...all upset and making a fuss because I'd left. And walks, just forget it. He'd pull me around for blocks and blocks.
I'd like to get another dog again some day, but right now I live in a compact apartment...and since I like BIG dogs, having one now just wouldn't work. Especially with my leaving to work during the day. With my previous pet experience, I know that a bored, unsupervised animal (especially in a confined space) can create all kinds of trouble to come home to.
