We NEVER get a cake from the bakery, they cost too much and are too small.

Honestly, I prefer it from the store. 
Don't get me wrong, I totally appreciate it when someone takes the time to bake me a cake, but for my birthday I would prefer something extravagant and I don't know any pastry chefs.

As far as homemade cakes, it would really depend on who's baking it. If my aunt Teresa was making her red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, then I'll take that one.

Bakery would be preferred but I wouldn't reject someone's homemade cake.

Yall know I don't do cake...But my family 99.9999% of the time will order from the bakery whenever were to have any type of cake for any celebrations.
