Now here's a woman who deserves to be applauded for her bravery and determination.

That's what are a lot of people are saying, that it was stupid because it was dangerous. Well in the aftermath of a massive hurricane like that, what exactly IS safe? Especially when you're working at a hospital and are desperately needed. And as somebody pointed out, firemen's jobs aren't safe, sure they have training for that but they still die on the job, they're still risking their lives everyday for their work, but nobody says they're nuts.

In New Orleans in the '70s a four-inch rainstorm caused flooding (water had to be pumped out). I was working at DePaul Hospital and got stranded at work because the relief shift could not get there. But one nurse showed up. She didn't swim but waded waste deep water to get in. (The same nurse that faced a psych patient with a shotgun and got him to give it up).

Nuts or courageous?

I guess it all depends on the outcome.

And as you say, they're trained. This woman dressed in heavy clothes including a scarf and tries to swim to work. And then she's lucky she could get a ride or she might have died of hypothermia. I bet there still would have been someone on duty in the ER to try and save her life. They just would have been diverted from another patient. If she had risked her life to save someone who was drowning from doing something she did, I'd say give her a medal.)

Nope. Nuts regardless of the outcome. Not saying these people don't have noble spirits. They're just putting their lives up for sale kind of cheaply.

Any one where the risk is necessary. Nothing in this story tells me her risk was necessary despite the word "hospital".
