| This is calling the Repugnican bullshit! This is the free market they keep harping on. This is where we get all our cheap shit for the big chain stores and where the investors make big money.
It is cheaper in those sweat shops because they do not have to follow all those costly regulations that our anti-business liberals push onto manufacturers here. So, they ship the jobs to Bangladesh, China, wherever the local corruption goes unregulated.
All runs smoothely until 112 ppl die a horrible death. Hopefully, the cause of this comes back to Walmart et al but the Sheeple in this country can't connect the dots and see our complicity in tragedies in other parts of the world. Wonder how many of the dead were children?

| Probably a lot Shale. This is the kind of thing that has a real potential to happen here if some of the republicans who want standards lowered & regulations done away with get their way.
And being able to buy things at a "bargain" even in a struggling economy is not worth this.

The Triangle Shirtwaist fire? There was a documentary on this earlier this year. Heart breaking. At one point, onlookers on the street thought the owners were throwing bolts of cloth out windows to reduce their loses. The witnesses soon realized to their horror that it was really the bodies of young women hitting the pavement as they jumped rather than burn to death. BTW, I seriously doubt that any political party has any affect on these working conditions. At least not in industrialized countries. This comes down to building codes for the most part and you never hear of a republican or democrat yelling that we need to make buildings less safe because it costs too much. This is something I deal with every day.

| Just about all devastating fires in the modern era have been due to greed, negligence or just plain old stupidity. Unfortunately, too many of the requirements of our modern fire and building codes are reactive after a tragedy has already occured. | |

It gets worse. Now they're saying the management waved off the fire alarm, the exit was locked, and the fire extinguishers were only for show, they didn't work at all.

| Yeah, that's what I read. There have been recent cases in this country where they found (among other things) that the sprinkler heads in a school weren't connected to anything. Just mounted in the ceiling tiles. Fortunately, people were doing their job and no one was hurt. Well, they didn't convict the two owners of the Triangle company so I'm not holding my breath that the people responsible here will be punished. | |
