Not particularly fan letters but I sometimes send correspondence to writers about something they've written and occasionally get a response. Got signed post cards from Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry, local writers with The Miami Herald after responding to their columns.
Also, I reworked one of Herald political cartoonist Jim Morin's drawings to change the point of view. He sent it back with a note saying he liked it and wished The Herald could publish it.
I wrote to Ed Asner after Lou Grant was cancelled in 1982 sending a copy of my protest letter to CBS. He wrote a charming personal letter back thanking me for my support.
Also, I wrote a supportive letter to Mary Kait Durkee and she wrote back thanking me. Oh, don't know who Mary Kait Durkee is?
She's the 15-year-old high school sophomore in California who protested saying the pledge of allegiance in 1998 because of the 'under god' ref - the same as I did in 1961. Only she made the national news when she was threatened with detention and the ACLU took up her cause. I try to give support to the next gen of civil rights protestors.
