    "Cult" movies Empty "Cult" movies

Post by Alan Smithee Tue Dec 25, 2012 7:21 am

A cult movie refers to a film with a large devoted fan base. Unlike major box office hits, a cult movie may not yield profits while in the theater, but rather gains momentum in DVD rentals and sales as well as cable television airings. There are a number of reasons a film can generate a cult following, and some that cannot be explained at all.

Some of mine (that I've probably mentioned before)

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)
    Mystery Train (1989)
    Repo Man (1984)
    Jerry and Tom (1998)
    Blood Simple. (1984)
    Let It Ride (1989)
The Brother from Another Planet (1984)
    Lone Star (1996)
    Brazil (1985)
    Up in Smoke (1978)
    Heavy Metal (1981)
A Boy And His Dog (1975)
    O Lucky Man! (1973)
    The Stunt Man (1980)
The Gods Must Be Crazy (1984)

The only two from your list that I have seen in theater were A Boy And His Dog (1975) and The Gods Must Be Crazy (1984). I have both on DVD, so they had a bit of an impact on me.

I also have Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) on DVD which to me it the preiminent cult classic because it still shows in theater with fans in costume reciting the lines as they play on screen. I am not of that cult. blank stare @ you

I guess my own 'cult' classics would be ANYTHING Star Trek, including ST: The Motion Picture which only a fan would watch.

IDK of its 'cult' status but I am a fan of some endearing movies, which I keep on DVD

War of the Worlds - 1953
    20,000 Leagues Under The Sea - 1954
    Romeo & Juliet - 1968 (Zeffirelli)
    El Topo - 1970
In The Realm of the Senses - 1976
    Star Wars IV - 1977
    Alien - 1979
Raiders of the Lost Ark - 1981
    The Terminator - 1984
    Blade Runner - 1991
    GATTACA - 1997

Rocky Horror is quite possibly the preeminent cult classic. I've been to numerous midnight shows but it wasn't until we got it on VHS that I could hear all the dialogue LOL.
