Black Ice

Does anyone have any past experiences with black ice?

I have always feared it on the highway, but not in the city. Well, two nights ago, my son and I were traveling very slowly through a seemingly clear street and as I was going around the curve to the left, the car totally went the other way toward a snow bank.

I was prepared to hit the snow bank and was hoping not to ricochet off it while trying to correct it. Somehow, I managed to correct it before we hit the bank. Aye....it was scary because there were many cars around us.

We get it all the time here in the winter. One of the leading causes of accidents because you can hit it before you know it's even there. Not fun.

Yep, gotta be very careful with it. I've seen someone who was driving right in front of me hit black ice and he went swerving off the road and ended up in embankment. Usually I can see it before I get to it and it's a great deterrent for my lead foot. The slightest speckle of black ice I see, I become a turtle.

I've never driven on it, but I have slipped on it and cracked my head against the car roof as I was getting in.

I think just about everyone who lives where it gets cold has experienced black ice (either driving or walking. It's one of the few times where it's good to assume. I'm glad you and the boy are OK, Red.

When I was a teen in Missouri, I slipped on it while riding my bike and went sliding on the pavement. Clothes protected a little but it still hurt. (only a teen boy would ride a bike in the snowy, freezing winter) blank stare @ you

i was just laughing at work wondering when we were going to get the "safety talk". Usually postal management screws up the time frame and gives us a "mowing your lawn safely" in the winter and "black ice driving" in the summer. lol
